Dear Ms. Toni,

My grandson is 3.  We just found out he has Autism.  We are not getting much information on what to do now.  He can not talk yet.  Can you please help me and my daughter on whats a good support group or something that can help us? My daughter is on welfare and the father of my grandson is not even in the picture at all.  He has never even touched my grandson, so I am trying to do as much as I can.  Please advise.  Any available information is greatly appreciated.  I am realy desperate at this point for him.  He is a handsome little boy.  This is all new to us.  Help us understand this condition.  Thank you.

C. Bryan

My daughter is 6 and was diagnosed 3 years ago I likewise was very confused and wondering what was next. I found a really good speechand occupational therapist who worked really hard with my daughter and myself. My daughter who was completely nonverbal began speaking. I also found a good developmental pediatrician who listens and is not afraid to take time with my family. Donovan's mommy's suggestion's are correct Autism Speaks has the first 100 days checklist for newly diagnosed families and Holly's site is incredible. She introduces you to her son RJ in a way that is real, touching and sweet. I wish more people would see it and really know what Autism really and see a face behind Autism. People have alot of preconceived notions and stereotypes. I sometimes have had to travel far away to get the best treatments. I sometimes have had to get out of my comfort level and go out of my way to creating playdates and meeting new people everyday for my daughter. (not just anyone but mature, kindhearted and patient children and adults.) Most importantly take time for yourself and praise your grandson everyday for where he is in his life. Most medical assistance should cover the treatments that I mentioned above as well as social skillls. Check with your insurance agency or caseworker. I applaud you for helping your daughter and grandson. I hope the information that I have provided is beneficial to you. Praying for you:)

Hi...I completely understand your situation, my son just turned 3 and he has been diagnosed with Autism as well. I found out that you can file for SSI benefits. I also found a wealth of information through Autismspeaks.org and hollyrod.org as well as www.child-autism-parent-cafe.com. I hope this information helps you begin to figure things out. It is still very hard for me, but we can get through this.
